    6. Start My Application
    Required DS-11 step

You do not go to the passport agency. You visit a local Acceptance Agent.

For new passport applications, the government requires your DS-11 signature to be witnessed by an authorized Passport Acceptance Agent. This is usually a post office, courthouse, public library, or local government office, not the passport agency that processes your passport.

APVI prepares your application packet first. Then you visit the Acceptance Agent, sign your DS-11 in their presence, show your government-issued ID, and have your documents sealed into an official envelope. The sealed envelope is handed back to you, and you send it to APVI so we can submit it through the expediting process.

    APVI prepares your packet

We help review your documents, forms, photo, and instructions before your Acceptance Agent visit.

    02

You visit a local Acceptance Agent

The Acceptance Agent witnesses your DS-11 signature, verifies your ID, and seals your documents.

    03

    You receive the sealed envelope

The Acceptance Agent gives the sealed envelope back to you. Do not open it.

    04

Send the sealed envelope to APVI

You ship the sealed envelope to APVI, and we submit it through our registered passport expediting process.

Do not open the sealed envelope. Once the Acceptance Agent seals your documents, the envelope must remain sealed when sent to APVI.

    What you'll need

What you'll need for a new U.S. passport.

Complete your DS-11 new passport application through the U.S. Department of State website. Do not sign it in advance, you sign the DS-11 in front of the Passport Acceptance Agent. Your APVI specialist reviews the completed form before you finalize your packet.
As part of your application, a proof of identification is required. Your specialist confirms which of the accepted identity documents works best for your situation before your Acceptance Agent visit.
You must provide a certified copy or the original citizenship evidence with your application. APVI reviews your citizenship document before submission so a rejected copy does not cost you weeks.
If you were previously issued a passport book and/or card, even as a child, it must be submitted along with the rest of your passport application.
Your passport photo must be taken within the last 6 months. Photos older than 6 months will not be accepted. Your specialist checks your photo against the current specifications before submission.
Provide a copy of your plane ticket, airline confirmation email, or travel itinerary showing your upcoming trip.
Adult applicants (16 years and older) pay U.S. Department of State fees separately: $213.36 for a passport book, or $243.36 for a passport book and card. These are paid by check or money order included with your packet.
Download and complete your APVI Letter of Authorization. The LOA allows APVI to submit your documents and receive them back from the Department of State on your behalf.
Once you have completed and uploaded all of your application documents, sign your checklist and upload it as the final item.

    DIY vs. APVI

First-time passport applications are easy to underestimate.

You must interpret the checklist on your own, and a small mistake can delay your passport and your travel plans. Here is how doing it yourself compares with having an APVI passport specialist review your application.

    Without APVI

    The DIY path

    • Citizenship document review: You decide on your own which citizenship evidence is acceptable.
    • ID document review: Identity document requirements can be confusing to interpret.
    • Passport photo review: You have to judge your own photo against the specifications.
    • Form and signature review: You must catch form, signature, and payment mistakes yourself.
    • Acceptance-facility preparation: In-person acceptance steps can create uncertainty.
    • Shipping instructions: You choose your own carrier and hope it arrives intact.
    • Processing speed: Standard government processing can take weeks.
    • Status support: Limited visibility once your packet leaves your hands.
    • Human specialist support: No one to call when a question comes up.
    • Return delivery: You wait for standard return mail.
